We're live!

We're live!

Today, Wistful Play is finally launched! This is a rather strange and sad time to be starting a business at the height of the Cronavirus pandemic but, in many ways, the challenge of doing so has helped to focus our thoughts and consider the kind of products that are most appropriate for children and families currently in lock-down.

Toys and games 2020

Toys and games 2020

Every January, the world's main toy and game trade event is held in Nuremburg, Germany. As well as being a magical wonderland of new toys and games (even for grown-ups!) it also provides the opportunity for leading industry commentators to advise on the trends that are especially influencing the toy and game industry and which themselves are driven by societal events and changes - for example, the campaign against non-recyclable plastic, gender balance and the importance of social family-time.

Watch the event video from January 2020 for a flavour of the scale and scope of the global toys and games industry.

Our Backstory!

Our Backstory!

I grew-up surrounded by traditional toys and games as a result of being born into the family business which began life in 1920 not long after my paternal grandfather made his way back to Scarborough after seeing Military Medal-winning action at Passchendaele, Belgium, in WW1.

It lasted until my father retired by which time it had lived its heyday as the go-to toy and games emporium with three shops in different parts of the town and which catered for a mix of locals and holiday-makers.

In creating 'Wistful Play', and launching on what would have been dad's 91st birthday in the centenary year of the family business, I like to think that I'm carrying on the same love of traditional toys and games - albeit in a C21st century setting which my ancestors would have marvelled at.

I've written the completed story - suitably illustrated with various photographs dating back to the early 1940s - and which is available to read and download in PDF format. (Opens in new window)
